Questions, answered
before you visit.
What people ask before their first class at the Academy in Henderson: experience, ages, gi and no-gi, cost, and what the first day is like. If your question is not here, the Academy is a call or a message away.
Starting out
Do I need experience to start?
No. Most people walk in with none. The Academy places new students in an age- and level-appropriate group class, and the Monday and Wednesday fundamentals classes exist so that positions, control, and movement can be learned at a pace you can use. You do not need to arrive fit, fearless, or familiar with the vocabulary. Book a free first class, or read about the adult program.
What is the first class like, and what should I wear?
You pick a real class time and you’re booked; there is no approval step and no call back to wait for. Wear comfortable athletic clothing and bring water. Loaner gis are available in limited sizes and quantities, so request one when you book; all gis are welcome. Park in any space that is not marked reserved and enter through the gate on the north side of the building. How the free first class works.
How does the free week work?
The free week is for new local-resident adults and kids. It runs for seven consecutive calendar days beginning with the first class you attend, in age- and level-appropriate group classes. No payment card is required, and nothing enrolls or charges you afterward. Book your free class.
Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu a good workout?
Yes, and an honest one. Jiu-jitsu is a full-body practice: you move, grip, carry and resist a partner’s weight, and keep thinking while you do it. The Academy teaches control before speed, so the effort builds with your ability rather than ahead of it. Morning training begins with class and continues into open training for those who want more. See the class schedule.
Kids and families
What ages are the kids classes for?
Kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is for ages 3 to 12, in two groups: ages 3 to 7 and ages 8 to 12. Students 13 to 17 train in the adult classes with a parent’s or legal guardian’s permission. Kids classes meet Monday through Friday, led by Coach Michael Nelson. The kids program.
Can I watch my child’s class?
Yes. Parents are welcome to observe, and we recommend staying to watch when your child is getting started. What a child’s first class looks like.
How is jiu-jitsu different from karate or taekwondo for kids?
Karate and taekwondo are striking arts: punches and kicks. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling art: no strikes are thrown, and children learn to control a partner with position and leverage rather than force. Every style teaches discipline and respect in its own way; here, listening, control, and care for training partners are part of what children practice in every class. More about kids jiu-jitsu.
Classes and training
What is the difference between gi and no-gi?
The gi is the traditional jacket and trousers, and gi training uses grips on the fabric. No-gi is trained in a rash guard and shorts, without those grips. Gi classes run Monday, Wednesday, and Friday; no-gi runs Tuesday and Thursday. New students do not need to buy a gi first: limited loaner gis are available when you book. See the weekly schedule.
Is there an open mat?
Yes. Open mat is Saturday from 11 am to noon, gi or no-gi and usually gi. It is open training rather than a taught class, so it is not bookable as a first class. The schedule, including Saturday.
Do you offer private lessons?
Yes. Private training is one-on-one, for a specific goal, a return to training, or a deeper look at the details that make a technique work. Rates are not published because they depend on the student’s needs; tell the Academy what you want to work on, and it will reply with availability and rates. Ask about private training.
Cost and passes
What does it cost after the free week?
Nothing is charged automatically. If you choose to keep training, kids memberships start at $149.99 a month and adult memberships are $169.99 a month. Family plans cover two, three, or four family members on one plan, and drop-in classes and a 10-Day Flex Pass are also available. Every rate, in one place.
Can I drop in, or train on my own schedule?
Yes. A drop-in is one class for $25.00; class eligibility is confirmed by the Academy before attendance. The 10-Day Flex Pass is $185.00 one-time for 10 separate training dates within 6 months, for one student, with no automatic renewal. It covers eligible group classes and excludes private lessons, seminars, and special events. Drop-in and Flex Pass details.
